Downtown Beaufort Featured Merchant: Mandy Mcnew

“I have two daughters, and when they were in their early teens, we’d go downtown to grab coffee and browse shops together. There was something magical about those days—those special stores we’d go into where it wasn’t just about what they sold, but how we felt when we were there. We’d laugh, connect, and always leave feeling a little lighter, a little happier.
That feeling stayed with me, and I knew I wanted to recreate that for other women—a place where they feel seen, welcome, and comfortable being themselves.
That’s the environment I try to create: safe, warm, and welcoming. I’ve had women spend over an hour here just trying things on and laughing—it’s like a mini retreat, and I love being part of that.
I want Sunshine and Sass to be whatever a woman needs when she walks through the door. There are times when you go shopping just to get away and want to be left alone, and other times you want a friend to hype you up while you try things on. Sometimes you come with your daughter, sometimes with your mom.
When it comes to what I carry in the boutique, I focus on three main things: friendly service, affordable fashion, and broad accessibility. Fashion should feel good, and it shouldn’t break the bank. I don’t want someone to feel like they need to spend $125 on a T-shirt just to feel stylish. I want women of all generations—moms, daughters, grandmas—to find something they love here.
That doesn’t mean everyone walks out with something every time, and that’s okay too. But I aim to make everyone feel like they could find something, no matter their age, style, or budget. I know a lot of boutique owners are told to “find their niche,” but this is my niche—making every woman feel like she belongs.
I remember once, two sisters walked in and almost walked right out because they thought the shop wasn’t for them. I gently challenged them to just take a look, and soon enough they were both in dressing rooms, giggling, and finding pieces they loved. They’ve been back multiple times. For me, that’s what it’s all about—inviting people to step outside their comfort zone, but only if they feel safe doing so. The key is creating a space where they feel safe exploring, where they don’t feel judged, where they can be honest and have fun. That level of comfort means I’m doing something right. They feel safe here, and that’s everything. I never push a sale. If something doesn’t fit right, I’ll say so in a kind way. I want people to trust me, and I want them to leave here with their chin held a little higher and a smile on their face—even if they didn’t buy a thing.
We’re originally from Oregon and moved to Beaufort about two years ago. After dealing with snow and cold for so long, we were ready for a change. Once our kids were out on their own, we decided to make the leap. We love it here—there’s such a strong sense of community, and it’s just a beautiful, welcoming place. I knew it was the right place to open Sunshine and Sass and to build something meaningful.
This shop is about more than clothes—it’s about connection, confidence, and kindness. That’s what I want every woman to feel when she walks in the door.”
